Mullet fish identification

Mullet

Also known as

Grey Mullet, Striped Mullet, Flathead Mullet

About the Mullet

Mullets are sleek, torpedo-shaped fish, typically silver with darker backs, often displaying subtle horizontal stripes along their flanks. They possess a distinctive small, downturned mouth perfectly suited for bottom feeding and two widely separated dorsal fins. Their powerful, forked tail allows for swift movements, making them a challenging target for anglers to net or hook.

Habitat

These adaptable fish inhabit a wide range of environments, from coastal temperate and tropical marine waters to brackish estuaries and even some freshwater systems. They are frequently found over sandy or muddy bottoms in shallow flats, mangrove areas, and around docks or jetties where they can graze on detritus and algae.

Distribution

Mullets are globally distributed, occurring in coastal regions worldwide. They are common throughout the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, with many species found along the coasts of North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Behaviour

Mullets are primarily detritivores, sifting through sand and mud for organic matter, algae, and small invertebrates. They are often seen "skipping" or jumping clear of the water, a behavior thought to be for oxygenation or evading predators. Typically schooling fish, they move in large aggregations and can be quite skittish, making them a challenging target.

Edibility

★★★★

Renowned for their delicate, flaky white flesh when properly prepared, mullets are a popular food fish in many cultures. While some varieties can have an earthy taste if not bled quickly, many consider them excellent, especially when smoked, fried, or baked.

Lure suggestion

Angling for mullet typically requires finesse due to their diet. Small bread balls, dough baits, or tiny pieces of shrimp fished on small hooks (size 8-12) under a sensitive float are often effective. Chumming with breadcrumbs or finely ground oats can draw them in. Some anglers also find success with micro-jigs tipped with bait or small flies mimicking algae on light tackle.
