About the Striped Mullet

The Striped Mullet is a sleek, silver-bodied fish easily identified by the several distinct dark horizontal stripes along its flanks. Typically growing between 12 to 30 inches, these muscular fish are built for powerful swimming in shallow waters.

Habitat

These highly adaptable fish inhabit a wide range of coastal environments, thriving in estuaries, bays, harbors, and along sandy beaches and muddy flats. They are often found in brackish and even freshwater systems, but always within reach of the ocean.

Distribution

Globally distributed, Striped Mullet are common in coastal tropical and subtropical waters across all major oceans, making them a widespread target for anglers and commercial fisheries.

Behaviour

Striped Mullet are primarily detritivores, filtering algae, diatoms, and decaying organic matter from the bottom, which makes them notoriously challenging to tempt with traditional baits. They are strong schooling fish, often seen leaping clear of the water, a behavior thought to be for predator evasion or possibly oxygen intake. They undertake seasonal migrations, typically moving into warmer waters during colder months.

Edibility

★★★★

When fresh and properly cleaned, Striped Mullet offers firm, flaky white meat with a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Many anglers consider them excellent smoked, fried, or baked, though their relatively high oil content means freshness and proper handling are key to optimal taste.

Lure suggestion

Catching Striped Mullet on a hook is an art due to their filter-feeding nature. The most effective methods involve heavy chumming with bread crumbs, oatmeal, or corn to create a feeding frenzy. Then, present tiny pieces of dough bait, bread balls, or small pieces of shrimp on very small hooks (sizes 8-12) under a light float. Some anglers also have success with small sabiki rigs tipped with minute bait.
