About the Pacific Bonito

The Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) is a sleek, torpedo-shaped fish, often recognized by its silvery body fading to a darker, iridescent blue-green dorsally. It features several distinct dark wavy lines along its upper back and a prominent dark spot near the pectoral fin. Its slender profile and deeply forked tail are indicative of its swift swimming ability, making it a challenging catch for light tackle.

Habitat

This species favors coastal waters, often found in large, active schools near the surface, especially over continental shelves and around islands. They prefer warmer, nutrient-rich areas where baitfish and zooplankton are abundant. Occasionally, they venture into estuaries.

Distribution

Commonly distributed throughout the Indian Ocean and extending into the Western Pacific, encompassing seas surrounding Southeast Asia, Australia, and parts of Africa.

Behaviour

Indian Mackerel are highly active, schooling predators, constantly on the move in pursuit of small baitfish, crustaceans, and zooplankton. They are known for their aggressive feeding frenzies, often breaking the surface as they chase down prey. Their swift movements and strong runs provide an exciting fight on appropriate gear.

Edibility

★★★★

Highly valued as a food fish, Indian Mackerel offers a rich, oily flavor and firm, flaky flesh. It's incredibly versatile in the kitchen, excellent for grilling, frying, smoking, or incorporating into curries and stews. Freshness is key to enjoying its full taste.

Lure suggestion

For anglers, small metal spoons, jigs, and sabiki rigs are highly effective for targeting schooling Indian Mackerel. Fast retrieves often trigger aggressive strikes. Live bait such as small shrimp or baitfish, fished under a bobber or free-lined, can also be irresistible. Look for surface activity or bird aggregations to pinpoint schools.
