About the Rock Scallop

The Rock Scallop, Crassadoma gigantea, is a distinctive marine bivalve. While its small juveniles are free-swimming, they soon become sessile, permanently cementing themselves to hard substrates. Adults develop a thick, often irregular shell that can blend seamlessly with rocky environments, occasionally revealing a notable purple hinge.

Habitat

These robust scallops are typically found firmly attached to rocky reefs and hard bottom structures in coastal marine environments. Once settled, they remain in the same spot for their entire adult life, primarily in subtidal zones.

Distribution

Their geographic range is exclusive to the eastern Pacific Ocean, inhabiting both shallow waters and moderate depths.

Behaviour

Young Rock Scallops begin as free-swimming juveniles before undergoing a significant transformation. They then become sessile, permanently attaching themselves to rocks and spending the remainder of their lives filter-feeding from their fixed position.

Edibility

★★★★★

Highly prized for its large, firm, and sweet adductor muscle, the Rock Scallop offers excellent table fare. Its rich flavor and tender texture make it a gourmet seafood choice, ideal for grilling, searing, or inclusion in chowders.

Lure suggestion

As a sessile bivalve, the Rock Scallop is not caught with traditional fishing lures or baits. Instead, anglers and foragers typically harvest them by hand, often requiring divers or free-divers to locate and carefully pry them from their rocky moorings. A sturdy pry bar or dive knife is essential for collection, and adherence to local regulations regarding size and bag limits is crucial.
