About the Speckled Scallop

These small, fan-shaped bivalves are instantly recognizable by their distinctive ribbed shells, typically featuring a mottled pattern of grays, browns, and sometimes purplish hues. Their shells are usually symmetrical, with small 'ears' or auricles at the hinge. A unique feature is their row of tiny, iridescent blue eyes lining the mantle edge, allowing them to detect predators and changes in light. Growing up to about 3 inches across, they are a prized catch for their delicate meat.

Habitat

Speckled Scallops thrive in shallow, protected estuarine waters and coastal bays, typically found nestled among seagrass beds like eelgrass and shoal grass. They prefer sandy or muddy bottoms, often attaching themselves loosely by byssal threads or resting freely on the seabed.

Distribution

This species is native to the northwest Atlantic Ocean, spanning a range from the coastal waters of New Jersey southward along the eastern seaboard and throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

Behaviour

As filter feeders, Speckled Scallops draw water through their gills to strain out phytoplankton and other microscopic organisms. While primarily sedentary, they possess a remarkable ability to 'swim' short distances by rapidly clapping their shells together, creating a jet propulsion that helps them evade predators like sea stars. Their activity and growth are highly seasonal, influenced by water temperature and food availability, often peaking in warmer months.

Edibility

★★★★★

Considered a delicacy, Speckled Scallops offer a wonderfully sweet, tender, and delicate flavor. Their small, firm adductor muscle is a highly sought-after treat, perfect for searing, broiling, or incorporating into various culinary dishes.

Lure suggestion

Speckled Scallops are typically harvested by hand while snorkeling or freediving in shallow waters, often spotted amongst seagrass beds. For those on a boat, a dip net can be effective, or they can be gathered using a small scallop dredge in permitted areas. The key is clear water and patience, as you'll be visually searching for these camouflaged bivalves.
