Surfperch

Also known as

Sea Perch, Barred Perch, Sand Perch

About the Surfperch

Surfperch are typically oval-shaped and laterally compressed, often displaying silvery bodies that can be adorned with bars, spots, or a reddish hue depending on the species. They possess small mouths and moderately large scales, adapting them well to their nearshore environments. The largest species within this family can reach an impressive 47 cm (19 inches) in length, though most caught by anglers are smaller.

Habitat

Primarily found in the shallow, turbulent waters of the surf zone along sandy beaches, rocky shores, and kelp forests. Some species also inhabit bays, estuaries, and a few, like the Tule Perch, can even be found in freshwater lakes and rivers in California. They prefer areas with ample structure or food sources.

Distribution

Their main range covers the Northeast Pacific Ocean, stretching from Alaska down to Baja California. A few species are also native to the Northwest Pacific, and certain freshwater populations exist solely within California, USA.

Behaviour

Surfperch are opportunistic feeders, primarily preying on small crustaceans like sand crabs, mole crabs, and shrimp, as well as marine worms and other small invertebrates they root out of the sand or rock crevices. They are known to school, often moving with the tides and currents in search of food in the active surf. A unique characteristic is that they are viviparous, giving birth to live young rather than laying eggs.

Edibility

★★★★

Surfperch offer a surprisingly good fight for their size and provide excellent table fare. Their white, flaky flesh has a mild, sweet taste, making them a popular choice for frying, baking, or grilling.

Lure suggestion

For surf anglers, sand crabs, pieces of shrimp, or mussel work exceptionally well as bait. A simple Carolina rig or a high-low rig with small, sharp hooks (size 4 to 2) is highly effective. Light to medium-light tackle is recommended for maximum sport, and fishing near structure or in troughs during incoming tides often yields the best results.
