Habitat

White Perch are incredibly adaptable, thriving in a variety of environments from fresh to brackish and even saltwater. They are commonly found in estuaries, rivers, lakes, and coastal ponds throughout their range. Look for them schooling in open water, often near submerged structures, drop-offs, or bridge pilings.

Distribution

These popular game fish are widely distributed along the Atlantic coast of North America, from the Canadian Maritimes down to South Carolina. They have also been introduced into some inland lakes and reservoirs beyond their native range.

Behaviour

White Perch are voracious and opportunistic feeders, primarily preying on small baitfish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. They are highly social fish, typically moving and feeding in large schools, which can make for exciting fishing. During colder months, they often retreat to deeper waters, while in warmer seasons, they can be found shallower, particularly during dawn and dusk feeding frenzies.

Edibility

★★★★

White Perch are renowned for their delicious, firm, white, and flaky meat, possessing a mild, sweet flavor. They are excellent pan-fried, baked, or grilled, making them a highly sought-after table fish.

Lure suggestion

For anglers targeting White Perch, small jigs (1/16 to 1/8 oz) tipped with a small soft plastic grub or a piece of Gulp! are incredibly effective. Small inline spinners, such as Mepps or Rooster Tails, also work wonders. When using natural bait, a classic bottom rig with a bloodworm, grass shrimp, or a small minnow on a Kahle or small baitholder hook will rarely disappoint.
