Least ConcernAbout the Freshwater Drum
Freshwater Drum are robust, deep-bodied fish with a distinctive humped back and silvery to bronze coloration. They possess a long, continuous dorsal fin, a rounded tail, and a subterminal mouth suited for bottom feeding. Known for the peculiar "grunting" sound they produce by vibrating muscles against their swim bladder, a unique identifier among freshwater species. Their appearance is often described as somewhat plain but powerful, making them an unmistakable catch.

Habitat
These adaptable fish prefer large, turbid rivers, deep lakes, and reservoirs, often frequenting areas with soft bottoms composed of mud, sand, or gravel. They can be found in a range of depths, from shallow flats to deeper channels, typically preferring slower currents.
Distribution
The Freshwater Drum is widely distributed throughout North and Central America, primarily found in the Mississippi River basin, Great Lakes, and extending south into Mexico and Guatemala. They are the only true freshwater members of the Drum family (Sciaenidae) in the Americas.
Behaviour
Freshwater Drum are primarily bottom feeders, using their specialized pharyngeal teeth to crush mollusks, crayfish, and insects. They are opportunistic scavengers and will also consume small fish. They are active day and night, often moving in schools, and are known for their strong, powerful fights when hooked, making them a fun sportfish. Their "grunting" can sometimes be heard during spawning or when stressed.
Edibility
★★★★★
The meat of a Freshwater Drum is white and flaky, with a mild flavor, especially when taken from clear, cool waters. Many anglers compare it favorably to other white fish, though some report a "muddy" taste if caught from stagnant or warm water. Best prepared fried or baked.
Lure suggestion
Anglers targeting Freshwater Drum will find success with a variety of baits and lures. Live or cut bait, such as nightcrawlers, shrimp, or small pieces of fish, are highly effective when fished on the bottom with a simple Carolina rig or three-way swivel rig. Jigs tipped with soft plastics or scent, and small crankbaits, can also entice bites, especially when retrieved slowly along the bottom.
