About the Spot

The Spot is a small, silvery fish with a compressed body, easily identified by the prominent dark spot located just behind its gill cover. Its fins often have a yellowish hue, and its dorsal fin can appear quite high. It possesses a small, down-turned mouth, characteristic of a bottom feeder. While generally small, their distinctive appearance makes them a fun catch for anglers.

Habitat

These adaptable fish thrive in a variety of estuary and coastal environments, commonly found over sandy or muddy bottoms, around oyster beds, and in tidal creeks. They frequently inhabit bays, inlets, and the surf zones along beaches.

Distribution

The Spot can be found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, ranging from Massachusetts all the way down to Texas.

Behaviour

Spot are schooling fish, often congregating in large numbers, particularly during seasonal migrations. They are primarily bottom feeders, using their small mouths to sift through substrate for small invertebrates like worms, crustaceans, and detritus. Their movements are often dictated by water temperature, moving into deeper, warmer waters during colder months and shallower estuaries in spring and summer.

Edibility

★★★★

Spot are highly regarded as table fare, offering flaky, white meat with a mild, sweet flavor. They are excellent when pan-fried, broiled, or baked whole, making for a delicious meal.

Lure suggestion

For anglers targeting Spot, small hooks (size 6-1/0) baited with pieces of shrimp, bloodworms, or squid are highly effective. A simple bottom rig, such as a high-low rig or a standard Carolina rig with a small weight, fished near the bottom in channels, holes, or along grass lines, will typically yield good results. They can also be caught on very small artificial lures or jigs tipped with bait.
