IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Tiger Trout
The Black-saddled Coral Grouper is a robust, predatory fish, typically recognized by its stout body and large, protusible mouth. Its coloration varies, but it commonly features distinct dark saddle-like markings or blotches over a lighter background, which can be mottled. Anglers will appreciate its powerful build, indicative of a strong fighter once hooked. Its large fins and stocky profile contribute to its formidable appearance on the reef.

Habitat
This species is a resident of coral reefs and rocky seabed structures, often found in moderately deep waters. They prefer areas with plenty of caves and ledges for ambush points and shelter. Juveniles may inhabit shallower lagoons, while adults tend to favor outer reef slopes and channels.
Distribution
Plectropomus laevis is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the East African coast to the central Pacific islands.
Behaviour
An opportunistic ambush predator, the Black-saddled Coral Grouper feeds primarily on smaller fish and crustaceans. They are territorial and often lie in wait near structure, darting out to strike unsuspecting prey. Their powerful, fast strikes make them exciting targets for anglers. They are typically solitary but can be found in small groups.
Edibility
★★★★★
Highly prized for its firm, white, and flaky flesh, the Black-saddled Coral Grouper offers a mild, delicate flavor. It holds up exceptionally well to various cooking methods, making it an excellent choice for baking, grilling, frying, or steaming.
Lure suggestion
Targeting this species is best done with live baits such as small fish or squid, presented near reef edges and drop-offs. Heavy jigs, large soft plastic paddle tails, and cut baits also prove effective when fished on or near the bottom. Employ stout tackle to handle their powerful runs and their tendency to 'reef' you once hooked.
