Oncorhynchus mykiss
Also known as
Steelhead Trout, Ocean-run Rainbow Trout
About the Steelhead
The Steelhead is the anadromous, or sea-run, form of the rainbow trout, known for its powerful fight and sleek, silver appearance. While in the ocean, they develop a distinctive silvery sheen with a darker, sometimes iridescent, back and a white belly, often with a faint pink or reddish lateral stripe. Small black spots usually pepper their dorsal fin, tail, and upper body. They are built for speed and endurance, making them a formidable opponent on the line.

Habitat
After spending two to three years maturing in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean, Steelhead embark on challenging migrations back to their natal cold-water rivers and streams. They prefer clear, well-oxygenated freshwater systems, navigating rapids and obstacles to reach spawning grounds. Their time in freshwater is primarily dedicated to reproduction.
Distribution
Steelhead are native to the cold-water tributaries flowing into the Pacific Ocean, found along the western coast of North America, from Alaska down through California, and also in parts of Asia.
Behaviour
In the ocean, Steelhead are voracious, opportunistic predators, feeding on smaller baitfish, crustaceans, and squid to fuel their rapid growth. Upon entering freshwater, their primary focus shifts to spawning, though they may still strike out of aggression, territoriality, or habit. Anglers cherish their explosive runs, acrobatic jumps, and strong, prolonged fights, making them one of the most sought-after game fish.
Edibility
★★★★★
Steelhead are highly prized for their firm, often bright pink to orange flesh and rich, delicate flavor, especially when fresh from the ocean. They provide excellent table fare for those who choose to harvest them.
Lure suggestion
Anglers employ a variety of techniques to target Steelhead, including drift fishing with roe, beads, or small jigs, and float fishing. Fly fishing is incredibly popular, utilizing various nymph, egg, and streamer patterns like intruders and leeches. Spoons and plugs can also be highly effective, especially in deeper, faster water.
