Habitat
These surface-dwelling pelagic fish thrive in offshore temperate, tropical, and subtropical waters worldwide. They are frequently encountered near floating structures such as sargassum weed lines, floating debris, or FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices), which serve as ambush points and attract baitfish.
Distribution
Mahi-Mahi boast a global distribution, inhabiting the warm, open oceans across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian basins. They are highly migratory, following warm currents and abundant food sources.
Behaviour
Mahi-Mahi are voracious and opportunistic predators, preying on a diverse diet of baitfish, squid, and crustaceans. They are exceptionally fast swimmers and often travel in schools, especially smaller individuals. When one is hooked, the rest of the school often stays nearby in a feeding frenzy, providing excellent opportunities for multiple hookups.
Edibility
★★★★★
Widely considered a top-tier table fish, Mahi-Mahi offers firm, white, flaky meat with a delicate, sweet flavor. It holds up exceptionally well to various cooking methods, making it perfect for grilling, baking, pan-searing, or frying.
Lure suggestion
Mahi-Mahi are aggressive feeders and will strike a wide array of offerings. Trolling with rigged ballyhoo, colorful skirts, or chugger lures is highly effective. Live baits like pilchards, cigar minnows, or goggle eyes freelined around weed lines or FADs are also deadly. Keep the first hooked fish in the water to hold the school's attention for more hookups.
