About the Spotted Bass
The Spotted Bass, often called 'Spot' or 'Kentucky Bass,' is a sleek, olive-green fish with distinct dark, often broken, horizontal lines along its flanks, which become a series of prominent dark spots below the lateral line. Its upper jaw typically does not extend beyond the back of its eye when closed, differentiating it from a Largemouth Bass. It also possesses a small patch of teeth on its tongue, a key identification feature for anglers.

Habitat
These adaptable bass prefer clear, gravelly flowing pools and runs of creeks and small to medium rivers, but are also commonly found thriving in streams, lakes, and reservoirs. They often congregate around submerged structures like rocks, logs, and vegetation.
Distribution
Native to the central and southeastern United States, their range extends from the Ohio River basin south through the Mississippi River drainage and into Gulf Coast drainages.
Behaviour
Spotted Bass are opportunistic feeders. Juveniles start on small crustaceans and midge larvae, while adults transition to a diverse diet including insects, larger crustaceans, frogs, worms, grubs, and especially small fish. They are known for their aggressive schooling behavior and often relate closely to deep-water structure, sometimes holding much deeper than other bass species.
Edibility
★★★★★
Similar to Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass offer firm, white, flaky meat with a mild flavor, making them excellent table fare. They are highly prized by many anglers for their culinary quality.
Lure suggestion
Spotted Bass respond well to a variety of lures, often preferring smaller presentations due to their mouth size. Effective choices include small crankbaits, jigs, finesse worms, drop shot rigs, and shaky head jigs. When they are schooling, spoons and swimbaits can be deadly, while topwater lures can elicit explosive strikes in low light or calm conditions.
