Habitat

Smallmouth Bass thrive in clear, cool waters, preferring rocky areas in lakes and gravel-bottomed runs and flowing pools of rivers. Look for them around submerged boulders, logs, drop-offs, and other current breaks where they can ambush prey.

Distribution

Native to the central and eastern regions of North America, Smallmouth Bass have been widely introduced throughout the continent and beyond, establishing popular fisheries.

Behaviour

Adult Smallmouth Bass are voracious predators, primarily feasting on crayfish, baitfish, and a variety of aquatic and terrestrial insects. They are highly active hunters, especially at dawn and dusk, and will sometimes even consume smaller bass. During spawning, males construct and guard nests in shallow, gravelly areas, typically around three to four feet deep.

Lure suggestion

Smallmouth Bass respond well to a wide array of presentations, making them a blast for anglers. Try topwater lures like poppers and walk-the-dogs in low light, or crankbaits and jerkbaits fished around rocky structure. Jigs, tube baits, and soft plastics rigged on a dropshot or Ned rig are also highly effective, mimicking their favored crayfish and minnow prey.
