About the Rainbow Trout
Known for their vibrant, iridescent pink or red stripe running along their lateral line, Rainbow Trout are sleek, torpedo-shaped fish. Their backs are typically olive-green to dark blue, fading to silvery sides and a white belly. Numerous small black spots are scattered across their back, fins, and tail, making them easily identifiable in clear water. Their powerful, streamlined build hints at the incredible fight they offer on the line.

Habitat
Primarily found in cool, clear, and well-oxygenated freshwater environments, including rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs. They often seek out areas with gravel bottoms for spawning and structure like submerged logs, rocks, or undercut banks for cover, as well as current breaks in moving water.
Distribution
Native to the cold-water tributaries of the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America, Rainbow Trout have been widely introduced globally into suitable freshwater systems, making them one of the most widespread and popular game fish species.
Behaviour
Rainbow Trout are opportunistic feeders, preying on a variety of aquatic and terrestrial insects, crustaceans, small fish, and fish eggs. They are known for their strong fighting ability, often leaping and making powerful runs when hooked. Freshwater forms typically remain in their natal systems, while the anadromous 'steelhead' migrate to the ocean for several years before returning to rivers to spawn.
Edibility
★★★★★
Their flesh is typically firm, flaky, and ranges from white to a beautiful pinkish-orange, offering a mild, delicate flavor that is excellent when pan-fried, baked, or smoked.
Lure suggestion
Effective lures include small inline spinners, spoons, and various soft plastics like PowerBait, artificial worms, or salmon eggs, often fished with light tackle. Fly anglers find great success with nymphs, dry flies (during hatches), and streamers, while live bait such as worms or corn can also be highly productive. Focus on presenting offerings near structure, current seams, or drop-offs, varying your retrieve to entice strikes.
